What are Current Transformers?

Electrical equipment that provide a flow of current in the secondary circuit that is directly proportional to the amount of flowing current with its principal circuit is called current transformers. Current transformers are the ones responsible in calculating the current so that the operation of power grid is monitored. This type of electrical instrument is widely used for the purpose of safety in any establishment that utilizes electricity at considerably large amount of voltage.

For metering and protective measures, current transformers are used. This equipment is very important among companies within the giant industry such as electrical power industry. The safety is guaranteed and made even easier through this tool.

How do current transformers work?

Current transformers cut off voltage flow securely so that only lower amount of current would flow, allowing the overloading of electric supply be minimized. This equipment controls electric current by allowing the voltage flow to pass through the windings of wire being wrapped around the well-insulated toroidal core. Current transformers measure the flow current, giving the necessary data to the reader so that the power being used at particular time and length of time would be monitored.

There are some factors that we also need to know about current transformers.

InP Technology To Be Used in Agilent Technologies’ Chipset for Next-Generation, High-Bandwidth Oscilloscopes

Agilent Technologies Inc. had just very recently revealed their technological advancement in the next-generation, high-bandwidth oscilloscopes—the new chipset that could make possible the production of oscilloscopes with true analog bandwidths greater than 16 GHz.

This new chipset will be using indium phosphide (InP) technology. The company claims that this would prove to be better than digital signal processing (DSP) and frequency domain interleaving, or also known as digital bandwidth interleaving or DBI) other bandwidth-enhancing techniques because it doesn’t cause a lot of commotion that hampers the performance and measurement accuracy of the oscilloscopes, a concern that usually comes with the aforementioned techniques. It is somehow also better than the silicon process technologies which are commonly used in the present, which are not truly able to extend the analog bandwidth above 16 GHz range.

The InP technology is said to actually enhance the capacities of the company's InGaP HBT (Heterojunction Bipolar Transistor) IC technology, yielding high-frequency capability with transistor switching frequencies up to 200 GHz. Aside from that, this technology also has better material properties than that with the gallium arsenide (GaAs) process formerly used by Agilent. This is because InP technology gives higher saturated and peak electron velocities, higher thermal conductivity, lower surface recombination velocity, and higher breakdown electric field, which makes the expansion of the present limits in true analog bandwidths.

It is also said that the InP technology enables oscilloscopes to have significantly flatter response at high frequencies, higher measurement accuracy because of the low-noise, nonconductive substrate, and higher reliability due to lower power consumption than what we have today.

It seems that the 16 GHz limit would just be the first step for the company. According to Jay Alexander, vice president and general manager of Agilent's oscilloscope organization, "Our first oscilloscope family offering this new high-speed chipset will start at 16 GHz bandwidth." They would be introducing this high bandwidth family in the first half of 2010.

Electricity Safety Tips

Electricity is a powerful two-edged tool. While it’s true that we have been highly benefited by its energy as it is used in our everyday lives, it also has a great potential for destruction when we don’t exercise care and caution around it. So here are some of the basic safety tips to follow in order to avoid electrical accidents.

One main thing you should do is to make it a habit to switch of unused appliances or equipments. This is not only a safety tip but is also a suggestion that could help lessen consumption of energy. Also, if you notice that a cord is unusually hot, unplug it immediately from the outlet, and then have your qualified electrician check and mend any faulty wiring as soon as possible. If possible avoid plugging on areas where wires can get tripped on. And make sure that your power cords are not faulty or damaged, or if they are, let your electrician do the proper repairs.

See if there is discoloration or burn marks in your appliances and refrain from using it without having it checked by a competent technician first. One thing you should also remember when buying your appliances is to make sure that they conform to the safety and quality standards. Do not buy devices that are cheaper, and check if what you bought have been recalled due to manufacturing problems. Follow the instruction manuals when using them. It would also be wise to conduct a regular PAT test for your equipments. This test is required as a safety regulation in workplaces.

Electricity should not be taken lightly just because it has been a part of our daily existence already. Even one act of negligence might cause unexpected tragedies. Following these safety tips would help. But being cautious is still the best safety procedure.

Facts about Insulation Tester

When doing projects such as home renovation, it is important to use insulation tester. The reason is that your overall safety is ensured by using such device. Prior to adding soundproofing material, major repair projects where electrical system quality is not known, and installing wallpaper, insulation testing should be done. Leaking current would result if there is insufficient insulation. Obviously, leaky current is the common culprit of hazardous events such as fire.

Insulation testers are one of the easy-to-use technology products; it can be used by a novice. This product is usually performed even without the help of a technician or an expert.

This product works with the application of DC voltage to the insulation system. The current that flows through the DC voltage is measured. Then, the results of the test would tell if there is or nothing wrong with your home electrical system. Current leak is accurately detected with this device.

There are several kinds of testers in which the very common ones are portable one. They come in 50, 100, 250, 500, and 1000 volts. Of course, you must not overlook the principle of parallelism; you have to use the right tester for the right system. This means that if you are going to test an electrical system with high voltage, you have to use testers that are capable of holding such current; if you are going to test a low voltage system, you have to use low voltage testers.

The Importance of PAT Testing

True, we have depended much on our electrical and electronic machineries and gadgets as we live our life. Everywhere we go it would seem almost impossible to live without such items, unless we go camping (even then, we can’t even go without electrical things like flashlights). In our normal daily routines we go through the day making use of complicated devices. While electrical appliances do eases our daily burdens, these can also pose a huge threat to us if we are not very careful. A lot of accidents have happened in workplaces because of damaged and defective electrical or electronic gears, which could have been prevented if certain standards are specified for such equipments.

This is why there is now the existence of certain legislations designed to protect the employers’ safety against electrical mishaps. One of them is the PAT testing of electrical appliances and devices which checks whether the said equipments comply with the health and safety standards imposed.

To ensure the safety of your establishment, you can either hire the services of professional PAT tester provider or train your own staff to do the test for you. If you are concerned with the financing of the PAT testing, PAT tester rental could be a good option. If you choose to rent, try to find a rental company who can provide expert technical assistance for you. PAT testing should be regularly conducted, either in 3-months or 6-months basis, depending on the risk that the devices entail.

“Better safe than sorry” should always be one of the standing principles in workplaces. Electronic appliances and electrical equipments are friends if they are safe to use and if used appropriately. If not, they can not only put your investments to ruin, but also be a threat to many lives. Although PAT testing would cost you, the money you invest in it could save you from the disaster that would cost much more if you neglect doing it.

Vibration Analyzer

Vibration testing is necessary in determining whether the machine is in good working condition or already suffering from minor to major mechanical flaws. In most cases, even the newly created machines are also tested in the laboratory if it will survive operating for a certain defined time span.

There are many factors that need to consider. The commonly utilized things include climatic chambers, data analyzers, vibration meter, controllers, accelerometers, level recorder, displacement transducers, vibration exciters, and many other test gears for mechanical vibration.

Other vibration test equipment that is also important in vibration analysis is called transducers. They convert mechanical energy into electrical energy. Through the electrical signal being produced, the functionality is defined.

Accelerometers are the commonly used transducers because of its outstanding sensitivity and wide spectrum of frequency. This test equipment usually comes in small size and weigh lighter than any other kind of transducers. They do not need the loading of vibrating mechanism just to get the rest results because it would calculate the vibration at a certain point.

Just like any other mechanical, chemical, physical, industrial, or general test equipment, vibration test equipment also very from simple to complex. Some devices only give binary results such as pass-fail results while other give sophisticated data of analysis. Most of vibration test equipment provides graphical display of data results for easier comprehension during analysis process.

Renting Electronic Test Equipment

It is difficult to buy equipment for a single use only. The costs are too much for the worth of the item. A solution to this dilemma is by renting that particular apparatus. Renting electronic test equipment not only saves money, it assures you that you get your money’s worth. This is simply because there are suppliers out there that rent out your wanted equipment for a single day or more. It all depends on the number of days that you put in the agreement sheet.

There are a couple of advantages in renting electronic test equipment. For one, companies that do not have the resources to move equipment from their main base of operations can rent the equipment from the nearest place available. This solves a lot of logistical problems because it might cost more money to move that equipment out into the field than renting it out from a nearby supplier.

Another advantage of renting such items is the amount of money that is saved when compared to buying the same equipment. For operations that lasts only a couple of days or weeks, it is the might be the best solution. Not only can you be assured that the item works, if it breaks down in the middle of the program, it can easily be replaced.

An example of electronic test equipment that you can rent is the portable appliance tester. However, if you are going to use this equipment for a prolonged period of time, it might be advisable if you just purchase it from the electronic store. As this not only guarantees the ownership of the item, it may also come cheaper in the long run.
